Benjamin Gammon was born on 7 July 1814 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and was the son of John H. and Mary Ann Bissett Gammon. Gammon married Deborah Pratt (1814-1897) on 9 May 1841 in Savannah, Georgia. He became a U.S. citizen in Savannah in 1854. The couple had the following five children: Rachel Ann (1843- ), Penthicilea Elizabeth (1845-1934), Jane Elizabeth Pratt (1847-1936), Benjamin (1850-1850), and John Alexander (1852-1928).
